Graphic Designers Use Icons To Tell Marathon Bombing Story

Creative inspiration from Fred Showker, 60-seconds.com

If a picture is worth 1,000 words, what about an icon? And what if that icon depicts a moment, a person or image from a nightmarish situation that is impossible to comprehend or fully describe?
Graphic designers at a firm in Cambridge have been exploring those questions. They felt compelled to respond to the Boston Marathon bombings in a somewhat austere language they hold close to their hearts: iconography. Their new book is called “102 Hours,” for the harrowing days that followed the explosions.

Technology growth pushes passion

Creative inspiration from Fred Showker, 60-seconds.com

Devon Nitz, Creative Director for the The Oswegonian writes : As a graphic design major, keeping up with technology is essential. Falling behind on the latest trends of anything relating to your livelihood is never a positive thing. Technology is constantly moving forward, with no intention of stopping.
Growing up, there were never smart phones or iPads. But today I heard that third graders have iPhones – and it boggles my mind. When I was a kid, I could never have imagined relying so heavily on technology, let alone having my major and career depend on it. In fact, when I applied to Oswego State, I was a marketing major – which is not closely related to design and technology at all.

A test of a logo or identity is often in its longevity. While most require tweaks, updates or complete redesigns over the years to maintain their currency, the greatest examples stand the test of time.
Veteran designer Brian Sadgrove has a folio full of such logos.

Knitting away the scenery

Creative inspiration from Fred Showker, 60-seconds.com

Rachael Bair, junior graphic design and graphic technologies double major, and Caitlin Kelly, sophomore anthropology major, work on yarn bombing a chandelier in the Honors Cottage Saturday.
Yarn bombing, a somewhat recent phenonenon, is when a group of knitters get together and cover up a public item, which can be anything from a statue to a trashcan. The Honors Student Advisory Board and the UNI Crochet and Knit Club came together to plan the recent yarn bombing at UNI as part of Honors Week.
