March: Designing Women

In celebration of Women’s History Month, each year we celebrate women in the design or visual communications fields. During February we selected four top flight woman designers to be spotlighted. You’ll meet two of them (below) and lots more during the remianing weeks in March and throughout April!

Also, today, be sure to read my 60-Second window #330 and the following story from the FBI about rip-off, copying and intellectual property!

For March, did you ever wonder who St. Patrick was? Well, just keep reading below and you’ll discover that old St. Pat had more to do with graphic design and typography than you thought.

Ilene Strizver : The hardest working woman in the Typography biz

Folks, meet Ilene Strizver, dsigner, type designers, and the hardest working woman in the Typography biz Ilene Strizver : The hardest working woman in the Typography biz

Favorite articles from Ilene Strizver, founder of The Type Studio and TypeTalk at Creative Pro

As we said in our cameo about Ilene Strizver, here are some of our favorite articles of Ilene’s from over the years. If you read all these articles, you’ll be smarter than most other graphic designers today! Have fun!

60 Seconds #329 : 10 Ways to BREAK the Creative Block for designers, illustrators, writers

If you think you’ve got the creative block, don’t think you’re alone. We all get it, and we all have to break it. I’ve been doing this for nearly half a century. During my seminar days, the creative block was one of the most popular questions from attendees. “Fred, how do you get creative ideas?” … “How can I break writer’s block?” Everyone has his or her favorites. These have proven over the years to work… try’em out next time you’re stuck for a story, a drawing, and ad concept or anytime you need a creative jumpstart.

Web Design : Is Complex Graphic Design UX Friendly?

Customer-centric web design and UX is on everyone’s mind in 2016. User-friendly websites should offer great content which is easy to find, quick to access and beautiful to look at. Yet so many companies seem to be falling at one of more of these hurdles … Elisheva Sokolic takes look at these issues in today’s web design!

This is one of the last sites where you will not be stalked
… it’s time to protect yourself from cookies

The web has become a very dangerous place to play. If you’re not monitoring and managing your cookies, then you’re at risk. Tracking and stalking has become so widespread the Design Center and DT&G is probably one of the only sites left that do not stalk our readers. Where you surf is your business, and your private information is not for sale. Maybe it’s time to protect yourself.

60-Seconds #330 : Is it a copy? Is it not a copy? Copy-anti-copy? Plagiarism? Stock?

During our work on this year’s Designing Women series we returned to catch up with Marian Bantjes, one of our ‘featured’ Designing Women back in 2006. She just keeps getting better and better — and we enjoyed reading her blog. Which brings today’s topic, one of her posts “Copy-Anti-Copy”.

Marilyn Monroe, August 1953: The Lost LOOK Photos

Dover passed along this book right at the right time — our 20th Annual Designing Women edition! Marilyn Monroe was an icon of the silver screen picture era, and what a great addition to this year’s “Women’s History” month celebration . . . sample photos, and a lot more in the Bookshelf

At last, powerful 2D and 3D, world class CAD for Macintosh

One of the disappointing things about the world of Mac is the blatant abscence of cad software. If you wanted to get anywhere in industrial design, drafting, fabricating or related manufacturing, you’re going to have to get Autocad and Solidworks for Windows. These companies own you. They charge thousands for the software, and they bleed you for thousands more for the annual upgrade. That may be changing.

Better story telling and visual flow using StoryBoard Artist

Storyboarding is and art, no matter if it’s for video, cinema, comic books or other visual sequentials. If you’re writing and producing TV spots, educational films, or other promotional motion pictures then Storyboard Artist is an essential!

Designers’ Concern : Countering the Growing Intellectual Property Theft Threat

Intellectual property theft affects all areas of design and development and the internet has helped it increase dramatically over the past decade. All designers have felt the ping of anger when discovering your client’s design used illegally. With many products and licensed products, it’s an epidemic — global theives stealing, duplicating and hawking anything to make a buck! This was sent by the FBI for all to read

April is just around the corner

We’ve had so much fun putting together our “Designing Women” folio pages this month, we’re really looking forward to more next month.

Speaking of mext month; each year, our April “Spring Colors” special ties right in with May’s Mother’s Day. As we move through March, be thinking about the colors you would use to decorate spring! We’ll share them with the other DTG readers.

We’d like to see YOU participate in any of these themes. Show us your portfolio. Share your problems and solutions. Help others with your knowledge and experience. Here’s how you can contact me to get started.

Keep in mind, we can still include your suggestions and nominations for Designing Women through the end of March!

Well, once again you’ve already wasted a perfectly good hour reading the DTG newsletter. Hopefully all is not wasted and you’ve gained at least one helpful tidbit of info.

Thanks for reading… go forth and be creative!
