The 20th Anniversary Fonts Fest Part TWO

DTGnews As we said in part one, our 20th year edition was too big to send in a single email. So this month’s newsletter will come in TWO PARTS, and this is PART TWO . . . read and enjoy!

Don’t forget, the Fonts Fest is two months — it runs through October! So if you missed getting your portfolio seen by millions of readers, there’s still time to let us know you’ve got something to say :

Fonts, lettering and typography surf FOUR

This is the last of this surf, but now we get to have some real fun watching seasoned professionals with real talent apply real ink in creating some superb lettering! I’m also very pleased to bring the official trailer for the movie “Sign Painter” — a fantastic documentary on the art, craft and times of sign painting. Later, we’ll dig deeper into the documentary, but for now, enjoy the September Fonts surf . . .

Jim Parkinson : half-century of typography

I was first introduced to Jim Parkinson and his groundbreaking style by my typography teacher Mike McNeal at VCU. One of our first projects was to hand-letter a name by duplicating a style that we found and liked. Well, of course, I chose “Rolling Stone” magazine.

New found free Script fonts for the 20th year!

If you’ve followed the design center and DTG for more than a few years, then you know there’s a real soft spot in our hearts for scripts and handwritten fonts. With a million fonts in the world, hand-lettering is the only real way to be unique . . . these are just a few of the new scripts we’ve discovered for this year’s event . . . New found free Script fonts for the 20th year!

Photoshop : Never make a Photoshop or Illustrator Style again!

I guess you saw our previous Photoshop Styles downloads but now we have a new collection. If you have ever attempted to make a new Photoshop or Illustrator style, you probably know what a pain it is. Any of these 300 styles for Photoshop can be easily modified to create thousands more. You may never have to make another style from scratch — ever!Photoshop : Never make a Photoshop or Illustrator Style again!

Graphic Designers Ask : How much should I charge

This is probably on of the most frequently asked questions in the graphic design business. Everyone is looking for a silver bullet — but there are no silver bullets. About ever five to ten years someone asks the question and I answer it. I’ve done so for almost 40+ years. They asked it again in the Design Cafe, so I provided this answer to “how much should I charge?” Graphic Designers Ask : How much should I charge

60-Seconds #315 : LinkedIN thinks 360,000 people, including me, are stupid.

From time to time I actually read some of the crap the social networking sites keep spewing at me. Today LinkedIn sent me an email with the big reversed-out head that reads : “Must Reads for Fred” — wow they’ve noticed me! But what they actually sent just makes you laugh! 60-Seconds #315 : LinkedIN thinks 360,000 people, including me, are stupid.

This Year’s Fonts Fest Poster

Of course we have an all new poster for this year! But we did it just a little differently — we pulled from all the 20 years of festivals in the Design Center. We’ve even provided you a hot link to generate your own, unique, Fonts Festival results in Google’s image search. Please enjoy! But let me tell you a little secret: If you pin that poster in your Pinterest or share it in your Facebook, then send me a screen proving you did it, your name will be in a drawing for a matted and FRAMED version of the poster, signed as “ap” by me, ready to hang — carefully packaged and shipped to your door! This offer is ONLY available in this newsletter, nowhere online. Period. Good luck. This Year’s Fonts Fest Poster

Enjoy September… onward toward October

With the Fall Fonts Festival nearly half over, we’ll be adding new items all through the month, and into October. It’ll be fun, and don’t forget to share your favorite type and font comments!

The BAD NEWS : The first six years of the fonts fest were build with HTML #1 web pages, and 256 color 640-by-480 monitor depths. 100% of the links in the first 8 years of the fest have gone dead. People just think nothing of letting their links go dead. So, unfortunately we can only go back to #10 or so — and even then, more than half of the links are dead and Google is penalizing us for those pages. But hey, when Google has been online in excess of 25 years, like the Design Center, maybe they will have learned some manners. Maybe not.

We’ll probably get started on the Holiday season during October as well, so get your thinking cap ready to share holiday and seasonal tips, tricks and promotions for November and December.

September is brought to you by the letter “S”

And, as for this month, well, you’ve already wasted a perfectly good hour reading the DTG newsletter. Hopefully all is not wasted and you’ve gained at least one helpful tidbit of info.

Thanks for reading
