SURF’s UP.. on the web

Graduation is behind us, school is out, and so the summer begins. It’s time for a little rest and relaxation… and SURFING!
To get you going, we’ve surfed our submissions and entries of reader sites to find these cool sites to share with you.
I will continue throughout June, as part of my “Creative Tidbits” so if you find really COOL sites in your surfing, just pass them along and we’ll share them with DTG readers – Contact me here

Creative Tidbits #206: political logos, fonts, pen & ink, creative blocks and more

Don’t you just love election years? With Facebook becoming the public bully-pulpit for Kooks, jerks, brains, hucksters, criminals and even legitimate politicians you can find more interesting takes on art ever — some good, and some will be bad but they’ll all be fun. And, along with that comes the traditional discussion of various logos. The web is now full of logo designers, in fact you can’t hardly turn a page without hitting two or three!

Welcome to Adobe Spark! A new way to generate social media content

Over the years Adobe has gotten bigger and bigger, but with very few really innovative new things — there’s a limit to the number of features you can add to a program and still have it a viable tool. SPARK is something I think the real world is ready for — and it’s probably the best thing Adobe has done in close to a decade . . . check this out NOT, while it’s free. You know, they’ll be back later for money!

NO MORE SUBMISSIONS — the honor system is dead!

You knew it had to happen sooner or later. The design center must now STOP ACCEPTING submissions, unless the submitter can authenticate the submission. As you know, we have always trusted our readers and submitters to honestly enter the form data when they sign. Now, one submitter’s image we accepted, trusting the submitter, has come after me for copyright infringement. The image had no copyright notice nor watermark — and was a 600 pixel, 72ppi web image.
Then we received a phone call from a law firm claiming to represent the photographer, demanding we remove the image. I immediately removed the file at their request and apologized for the misunderstanding. Now the law firm is back, demanding money for the owner — and, a lot more than the usual stock photo licensing fee.
First, we’re not sure the owner didn’t “seed” the image so they could come back for money later, we also never got any kind of indication of the exact file, nor any kind of authentication from this photographer or the law firm. And, lastly, we were able to pull up the very same image on 936 sites, and we’re now wondering if all of them paid fees, ripped-off the photo, or were “seeded” for “compensation”. Amongst the 936 instances, at least three laid claim to the property. It would be a huge revenue generator to demand payment, just under the cost of litigation. In fact, one could easily make a living at this practice. It’s a mystery, and I’ll keep you posted. But the bottom line is :
NO MORE SUBMISSIONS.

July, August and Summertime Design

Well, it’s unfortunate we can no longer accept your photo submissions — we have no idea if you’ll come back later to extort money from us. But do take this opportunity to share your Photos with DTG readers on your OWN site, and send us the link so we can come and review!

We wish you happy surfing … and good times during June — enjoy the show.
