Attendees to this year’s Typographics festival will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of learning programs that inspire innovative and creative thinking about typographic design. The festival at The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art offers a variety of workshops, type-centric tours, a book fair and the collaborative and interactive TypeLab.

The workshops, tours and related events that comprise the ‘type festival’ are meant to give participants an extended opportunity to share ideas, expand their design thinking, grow skills and, of course, socialize with colleagues in these fields,
The workshops, tours and related events that comprise the ‘type festival’ are meant to give participants an extended opportunity to share ideas, expand their design thinking, grow skills and, of course, socialize with colleagues in these fields, 
Workshops will cover topics as varied as Python programming and making emojis to more traditional techniques such as hand lettering and sign painting. Tours include special curators’ talks at The Cooper Hewitt and the Herb Lubalin Study Center of Design and Typography and walking tours showcasing design history through sign and architectural lettering. Visits to local prominent design studios give an insider’s view of how the typographic arts are practiced. An ongoing book fair featuring typography and graphic design books as well as vintage type ephemera will be held concurrently.
A highlight of Typographics’ related programming is TypeLab, a hackathon for typographers, typeface designers and graphic designers. Originally conceived in 1993 by Petr van Blokland and David Berlow, TypeLab offers an informal technology-focused opportunity for conference attendees to experiment and build new tools for use in their design work.
van Blokland, who will be leading TypeLab’s interactive programming said
TypeLab will run on Wednesday, June 15, Thursday, June 16, Sunday, June 19, Monday, June 20 and Tuesday, June 21, 2016. Free day passes will be issued online and at the door. TypeLab is by nature a spontaneous series of events. Some will be scheduled ahead of time, some on the fly and everything is subject to change.
