26th year of DT&G — did you miss me ?

Happy new year, and welcome. Some of you missed the January newsletter, and I thank you all for your good words and sentiments. All the rest of you didn’t miss us, or else didn’t mention it. Most of you already know I retired, closed Showker Grahic Arts & Design, and sold the studio facility in December of 2015. I’ve been blessed with another grand child, and am about to make some fairly dramatic changes in my online world. Folks, we’re going back to graphic design — back to where I started — back to the roots of DT&G. Follow along, it’ll be fun!

Vintage Valentine’s Cuts copyright free clip art on CD-ROM

We believe, vintage images evolk memories of by-gone days. Mostly created in the Victorian era, these collections illustrate high talent in simpler times — when artists could afford to spend the time for such art. Now they are at your disposal for graphic design projects, cards or decorations. Even if you don’t actually use any of the cuts, they’ll provide some excellent resource materials that are copyright free. They’re low cost, and provide the ready-to-go
And now for something totally different . . . for this creative surf, I thought it would be fun just to snoop around and see what kind of creative projects others are doing. We found a few :Vintage Valentine’s Cuts copyright free clip art on CD-ROM

60-Seconds #328 : Why do cybercrime spam cartels keep sending the same, tired old spam?

As many of you already know, I’ve been a volunteer spam fighter since February 15th, 1999. I had a passion about helping keep the Internet clean since developing forums for GEnie, eWorld and America Online back in the 1980s. Now my work goes on through Knujon.com, Spamcop.net and SafeNetting.com. We’ve all agreed that one of the real pains of the online world is someone trying to sell you something — particularly if the solicitation is false, illegal, or damaging in some way. But through the last several years, ugly “sex enhancement” spam solicitation had diminished. Or so I thought.

Ad Blockers : people finally had enough and now see no ads! Can you blame them?

We have been following this issue since last November — and being one of the first sites to begin the cruisade against online advertising back in the 1990s, we’re delighted it’s finally getting some public notice. But the industry is fighting back. I posted this one yesterday on UGNN … Forbes, ad blockers and malware … another warning! Just because they’re a big name, doesn’t mean they have scruples. Here’s the rest of the news

60-Seconds #327 : Who establishes the logo design trends for 2016?

Somebody posted their ‘logo design trends for 2016’ to a LinkedIN design group, so I decided to follow it. Much to my surprise, they talked about design techniques that have always been in use, and never go out of style. Needless to say, I was intriqued. Who really decides what the logo design trends for 2016 really are? I went on the quest.

Awesome Steampunk photo manipulations and photo-realistic illustrations!

There are many, many fans of steampunk style which is a large subgenre of science fiction and fantasy. These images have been inspired by technology and aesthetic designs from the 19th-century industrial steam-powered machinery ~ set in an Art Nouveau era as an alternate history. Lots of readers saw our Steampunk Spectacular from last Halloween and send in their examples Awesome Steampunk photo manipulations and photo-realistic illustrations!

Creative Tidbits #202: anti-drug drive posters, Bikinis, Photoshop Action and more

Rolling into a new year of Creative Tidbits, we’re finding these great discoveries and enjoying the creative experience around every corner! Remember, we’re always looking for your suggestions and tips for cool stuff. Enjoy this edition of Creative Tidbits

Awesome Photographic modifications and manipulations that defy reality

Gosh … I’ve been slowly cleaning out the libraries of images and emails sent in by readers and there are hundreds of unaccounted for images. With many of these, we do not know who sent which image. We do know that for the past 25 years we’ve invited submissions of portfolios and samples — so if YOU sent any of these, or you created any of these, please contact us so we can give proper credit! Creative coloring apps for designers and illustrators of all ages

Recently we’ve had an “adult coloring” thread going, looking at all aspects of grown-up coloring books. Of course with the adult coloring fad, the app developers would jump in on the act. So, here we’ll take a look at several apps for your mobile device that simulate real-world coloring.

Dinotopia: A Land Apart from Time … inspiration for artists and visionaries

When James Gurney’s Dinotopia: A Land Apart from Time first appeared in 1992, it was immediately hailed as a fully imagined world of the caliber of J. R. R. Tolkien’s! Gurney’s premise — of an undiscovered island where a race of mystical humans co-exists in harmony with intelligent dinosaurs — has been since reiterated over and over in numerous films and by scores of other writers.Dinotopia: A Land Apart from Time … inspiration for artists and visionaries

A New Year and A New Look: McDonald’s Global Packaging Launches In Style

Starting this month, McDonald’s restaurants in the United States will unveil new carry-out bags, fountain beverage cups and sandwich boxes. I don’t know if this is a hallmark in graphic design, but looking at the history of McDonald’s packaging and their urban positioning, it looks like a fun change.

WATCH for upcoming changes in the sites and in the editorial slant

As I mentioned above, I’m going to return to the roots of DT&G and 60-Seconds and talk about design. There are ten-million Photoshop experts online, so I no longer need to talk about the tools we use. Everybody is an expert web designer, and photographer. So those departments can go away. There are 13,567 “inspiration” pages posted each day, (most who copy each other) so I don’t really need that department any more.

However, there are precious few who can help you actually design — or can help you understand why. Everyone says “learn how to design” but turn out to be a software tutorial. Folks, you don’t design with software. Many think that “designing” is using Illustrator or Photoshop. The InDesign gurus say helping you design a newsletter using InDesign — it’s a tutorial, not brain juice.

So, follow along as we return to critique, analysis, dissection and the reasoning of design. Home again!

Parting words for February

The future is not some place we are going,
        but one we are creating.
The paths to it are not found but made,
and the activity of making them changes both the maker and the destination.”
                John Schaar
