Students at AU in Cairo tackles cultural, educational issues
AUC’s graduating class of Graphic Design is set to display their final projects in an exhibit titled Mebaksel Keda Leh? (Why So Pixelated?) at the university’s Sharjah Gallery. On 8 and 9 December a panel of advisors was invited to critique the student’s works, as a pedagogical opportunity for the students who presented and defended their work. A retrospective of seminal graphic designer Les Mason’s work will launch National Gallery of Victoria’s Design Studio. Known as the father of graphic design, Mason revolutionised the advertising industry in the 1960s by establishing graphic design as a profession in and of itself. Cambridgeshire County Council road safety officers set the Wisbech based students the task of coming up with a campaign to highlight the dangers of drug driving. The winning concept was a series of posters designed by Jake Howlett, who has since started Graphic Design at Norwich University of the Arts. Clever ‘Common Sans’ Font Has a Hidden Humanitarian Message
From our “STUPID THINGS DESIGNERS WASTE THEIR TIME ON” department … a font that doesn’t work. If you type the word “refugee” using the new typeface Common Sans, something potentially confusing happens: “Refugee” immediately autocorrects to “human.” That’s not an error. It’s the handiwork of Swedish design studio Essen International. It created the graphic bit of activism as a pro bono project for the non-profit Solvatten to make people rethink the issue. “Often this is what you read in the headlines, about refugees, and you forget that they’re humans,” says creative director Robert Holmkvist.
