Could Pixelmator Watercolor Painting Technology be the one that replaces Photoshop?

I remember a small program that came along a quarter of a century ago that just blew everyone away. I see hundreds of start-ups — they come and they go — but when I see Pixelmator, I’m scratching my head wondering if I’m looking at the next big thing . . . could this be the beginning of the end of Photoshop?

Pixelmator 1.1, codenamed Aquarelle – a major update to its easy-to-use, fast and full-featured image editor for the iPad. Pixelmator 1.1 comes with a unique watercolor painting technology, a collection of artist-designed watercolor brushes, a new Color Picker, twice as fast painting performance, and more.

Saulius Dailide, one of the founders of the Pixelmator Team said

Quoting begins It took an extremely close collaboration between watercolor artists and our engineering team to develop a unique watercolor painting technology that makes it easy to create fascinating, real-life looking watercolor paintings … We think that the new Pixelmator watercolor technology will inspire painters as well as creative photographers to find new ways of expression on their iPad. Unique for the iPad, new watercolor painting technology in Pixelmator 1.1 lets you create watercolors right on your iPad. Artist-designed brushes from the new watercolor brushes’ collection apply colors with watery strokes, just like applying paint on paper with a wet brush. When brush strokes overlap, their colors blend with each other, creating an entirely new color with a soft gradient between them. With Pixelmator 1.1, you can create beautiful, soft and vibrant watercolor paintings or simply use watercolors to add an artistic touch to your photos.

To enhance the painting experience, Pixelmator 1.1 for iPad introduces an innovative new Color Picker. With a completely redesigned Color Picker user interface and a beautiful Color Grid, you can choose colors with much greater precision and ease. Furthermore you can quickly access recently used colors or create your own color swatches for later use.

Painting in Pixelmator 1.1 is now also a lot faster. Engineered using OpenGL ES and taking full advantage of the A8X iPad processor, the upgraded Pixelmator Paint Engine has been optimized even further. Painting in Pixelmator 1.1 for iPad is now two times faster, so you can paint smoothly and in real-time.

Pixelmator 1.1 Aquarelle is packed with other great features such as an ability to insert a photo as a new layer from iCloud Drive, lock image transparency with Lock Alpha, open RAW image preview, a refreshed Eyedropper tool, live brush preview, and better stylus support, including support for Adonit styluses. Pixelmator 1.1 can now open 16 bit, RGB, CMYK and Grayscale Photoshop images as well as Photoshop images containing layer masks – making Pixelmator 1.1 the most Photoshop-friendly app on iPad. Pixelmator 1.1 also comes with major overall stability and performance improvements.
