Ahava is a new preschool associated with the Ahavath Achim Synagogue in Atlanta, and Black Bear designed a beautiful website that would speak to the innovation of this new parochial school.
      Jena Simonds is the Lead Graphic Designer and Copywriter for Black Bear, and loves working with a wide variety of clients. She created this identity program for Ahava!

Designing Women: designer becomes top creative ‘crowdsourcer’

Creative inspiration

After losing her San Diego ad agency design job, Holly McAlister decided she’d had enough of corporate life. It was 2005, two years before the Great Recession, recalled the graphic designer.
      Holly McAlister displays some of her design work, which includes reports, marketing materials, print advertisements, hang tags and calenders, as well as packaging for foods, beverages and cosmetics.

      What would it feel like to date a longtime friend for 40 days and nights? That was the challenge that two thirtyish New York City-based graphic designers, Timothy Goodman and Jessica Walsh, took on when they played a self-imposed dating game between March 20 and April 28, 2013 and recorded the experience

The Military’s Graphic Design War On Venereal Disease

Going into WWII, troops were told who their main enemies would be: Hitler, Mussolini, Hirohito, and… gonorrhea. In order to prevent the type of rampant venereal disease that plagued the U.S. military during WWI, in the late 1930s the government commissioned a series of colorful PSAs aimed at warning troops of the dangers that lurked with randy pleasures.
      Fool the Axis—use Prophylaxis!

Kemistry’s Graham McCallum on 100 years of design changing technology and technology changing design

Creative inspiration

Most of you will have heard by now about the Doves typeface, which was thrown into the Thames at the beginning of the last century and, amazingly, recovered by Robert Green this year. Now of course a digital version of what was once an exclusive typeface can be downloaded by anyone at any size, no longer restricted to the 16pt original.
      The transition from analogue to digital hasn’t always been easy.

The works of Jean Jullien … an interview

Creative inspiration

Jean Jullien‘s instantly recognizable signature style and observational take on modern life has seen him become one of the most sought after image-makers in the world. Often character based with his distinctive black line illustration style, his work is always well observed and very funny.
      Originally from Nantes, Jullien studied at London’s Central Saint Martins and later at the Royal College of Art before adopting London as his new home. In 2011, he launched Jullien Brothers with his brother Nicolas – an animator and electronic musician under the name Niwouinwouin. The pair create films and animations together, and are currently working on a new animated series.

This is beading on steroids … down south of the border

While graphic design it ain’t, this is something of note: eight artisans from the communities of Nayarit and Jalisco are showcasing their amazing bead work on an entire car!
      The team of Huichol bead artisans took 9,000 hours to completely adorn the car both inside and out. They covered virtually all the surfaces including the mirrors, seats, steering wheel and dashboard!
