A Photo Exhibit That Examines Climate Change
Photographers play a critical role in driving home the effects of climate change—just try not to shudder after seeing a picture of a flood-ravaged city not so different than our own. Four such image makers will be showcased this month in “Sink or Swim: Designing for a Sea Change,” an exhibition curated by writer and KCRW host Frances Anderton. How big data is revolutionizing design
Picture an architect laboring over a blueprint, or an auto designer working out the basics of next year’s model. Once upon a time, this mental image probably included a drafting table and a clay model, but not much else. With some variation, those were creative tools that designers, architects and artists relied on to render their inspirations, refine them into concepts, and finalize them into market-ready products. Why Aren’t You Creative?
Vice president publishing, NACS Media Group, at NACS, Erin Pressley writes : My daughter is wildly creative at nine years old. She dances, she paints, she draws and she comes up with the most unique turns of phrases. Last week, after a particularly difficult night of sleep, she explained to me that she was “nightmaring” all night. What a beautifully invented word! I read recently, in a book titled Out of Our Minds, that all of us are born with this kind of unbridled creativity. Author Ken Robinson defines this creativity as “the process of having original ideas that have value.” Full story : Erin Pressley Take a look at this
6 Common Mistakes in Graphic Design
There is nothing new in this article … these rules have been rules for the past 50 years or so. Graphic Designers have to be very detail oriented and often are required to wear more than one hat at a time. This can lead to simple mistakes and oversights. Here are some common graphic design mistakes and how to avoid them. Full story : Roberto Blake ~ Creative Pro Take a look at this
Looking at the artwork of the Criterion Collection
What makes the Criterion Collection what it is to be the movies. No other video distributor has such an impressive, even indispensable catalog. That tilted broken-circle logo designates not just a company but a standard. If all the cinematheques and archives went up in smoke, so long as the Criterion Collection remained intact, a pretty good account of film history would survive. Inside the Cinelli and Columbus factories
Behind nondescript walls, artisan pedigree meets strong artistic affection From the outside, the adjacent buildings blend in with anonymous-looking warehouses, factories and other surrounding enterprises. There are no signs on the gates or walls to indicate the wealth of history, creativity and craftsmanship that lies behind them. Full story : www.bikeradar.com Take a look at this
The Colorful History of California Graphic Design
Louise Sandhaus’s new book, “Earthquakes, Mudslides, Fires & Riots: California & Graphic Design 1936-1986” ($55, Metropolis Books), is a collection of visual artifacts as eclectic as California itself. The volume begins in the year that the L.A. transplant Merle Armitage designed the nontraditionally laid-out book “Igor Stravinsky” and ends with April Greiman’s “Does it Make Sense,” a life-size digital nude self-portrait that heralded the arrival of Macintosh computer design. 1938922611 Full story : New York Times Magazine Blog Take a look at this
