Greetings and welcome to December and the Holidays!

DT&G Newsletter for January 2015This issue was nearly as big as our Fall Fonts Fest issue, but rather than split into two, we just cut out all the fluff and edited it down to under 17K. When was the last time you got an email newsletter this trim, with this much great stuff??? Well, last month’s DTG, of course.

Most people by now know that “DT&G” (or ‘DTG’) means “Design, Typography and Graphics” … a journal I started in 1988 as a PDF-file distributed on disk. (Actually, it was not a PDF because Adobe hadn’t invented PDF yet!) Along with DTG came 60-Second Window — my blog (before blogs were invented) originally published on the MNS disks, and America Online. In 1990, we took both DT&G and 60-Seconds online and here we are, 25 Years later! A quarter of a century online. In January we’ll begin the 25th anniversary of DT&G, 60-Seconds and the Design & Publishing Center Online. Please, if you read anything in this newsletter, read my closing comments at the end. . .

    Happy Holidays … enjoy!

25 awesome examples of fantasy illustration from The Golden Age of Illustration

From the Art Nouveau period, famous fables and tales were enjoying a true revival, and of course those books had to have cover illustrations and plates that would tell the story. These artists have delighted a dozen generations — yet their work seems as fresh and inviting as it did the day the books hit the shelves. These were some of the leaders of the “golden age of illustration” — Please enjoy these from Arthur Rackham, Warwick Goble, Kay Nielsen, Edmund Dulac and Willy Pogány

Are you being held hostage by Adobe? InDesign? No more!

One of the worst things that happens to One of the worst things that happens to graphic designers is the dreaded “Version Racketeering.” I don’t know who first coined that phrase, but the Title 15 of the U.S. Federal Code defines racketeering as engaging in such practices as extortion. Racketeering legislation came into being as a result of someone forcing someone else to pay money to avoid something unpleasant, harm or punishment. Version racketeering says … “pay us money by upgrading or we won’t let you open this file.” . . . until now!

    60-Seconds #317 : Goodbye SpamCop

As many of you know I’ve been an avid spam fighter and anti-spam advocate since the dawn of email. You may remember several articles I’ve written over the past two decades about SpamCop. Well, with great sadness, in this edition, I bid farewell to Spamcop.

Typography : many styles and combinations make this a true vintage collection!

Born on my birthday, August 18, in Seoul, South Korea, Hyung-Seung Lee could quite possibly be one of the “new masters” of this typography generation. In 2013, Hyun-Seung Lee, and two friends Dae-Hoon Hahm and Min-Joo Ham, together, designed the Core Bandi font — and what? They’re already color separated for flat-ink screen printing! WOW

Typography : Adorn your designs with borders, banners and catchwords collection!

Ladies and gentlemen, meet graphic designer and font virtuoso, Ms. Laura Worthington. We ran across Laura two years ago during the Fall Fonts Festival, and I earmarked her for a future piece. Well, during prep for December, I peeked in on her and WOW — discovered “Adorn.” Wow! This is not just a font, it’s a period design genre! Wow! This is not just a font, it’s a period design genre!

    19. A Quarter Century Online

After all these years, I still have names in the database who have been aboard since the beginning. That’s a warm feeling — to know that we’ve been doing the right thing all along. The world has changed, and so has online life. In the beginning we scarcely could convince people to get an email address. I must have asked the question a million times : “Do you have email yet?” … and now I can scarcely get anyone’s attention — they’re too busy with their noses stuck in their smart-phones. Sheesh.

This is the Holiday season and although it’s the time most people really open their eyes to helping other people — the holiday frame of mind should go on all year long. Do yourself a favor — go out and do something good for others. Donate to charity. Volunteer your time. Give a helping hand. These acts of kindness will give you a warm reward — the kind you won’t get anywhere else.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New year!

    Parting words for December…
