60-Seconds #312 : The Age of Bad Photography Ever since the social networking fad hit the internet a new genre of photography has become the most popular form of photography in history. It’s called “BAD” photography.

For some reason, when Instagram brought out its handful of filters, everyone and all of their cousins were so overwhelmed with the newness of filters they were instantly compelled to use them. They didn’t just use the filters for ‘effect’ or once-in-a-while where it actually fit the subject matter — they used them on every shot. Thus begins the age of bad photography.

Okay … so it was ‘cool’ for you to put up pictures of yourself in a mirror — or okay to use your cel phone to grab a shot of the hairs on your dog’s nose. But seriously folks, when ‘bad’ becomes the norm, that’s a bad reflection on you. I guess the “old washed out Polaroid” filter is the most used. I think most people have that one as the default. And since there’s only a few filters, we end up seeing the same tired effect in hundreds of thousands of images.

So you can imagin how we laughed out loud when a reader sent these top ten photos we wish you wouldn’t post. We were compelled to post them because it’s a pretty good laugh at ourselves. They’re funny, but seriously — not really that funny. We have no idea where they came from or who put this together but BRAVO — thanks for sending them in.

So, if you were just getting ready to post your most recent selfie, or feet in the sand, or booz, or dog’s nose to Facebook, please think twice. Is it really important? Do you think everyone wants to see it? Is it unique? Does it make a statement? Does it go along with anything else … in the news or happenings that your readers / viewers will be familiar with? Or, does it just give you self gratification?
