Learn: Anatomy of a Typeface
We introduced you to Typedia back in 2005, and we like to revisit each year during our Fonts Fest. This year we saw their “Learn: Anatomy of a Typeface” and went hunting for our first “Anatomy” published in 1986 prior to our AppleWorld desktop publishing presentation. We included the first digital “Type Anatomy” with our Monster Fonts kit which was sold for several years on 400K disks. Unfortunately, we can no longer open the 400K disks — so, it’s good that sites like Typedia are keeping this valuable lesson alive. Typedia is a community website to classify typefaces and educate people about them. Think of it like a mix between IMDb and Wikipedia, but just for type. Anyone can join, add, and edit pages for typefaces or for the people behind the type. Full story : Typedia : A Shared Encyclopedia of Typefaces See a screen shot
Smart people do smart things … Jason Santa Maria
We first told you about Jason back in April of 2006, when he started Typedia. He’s a hellova smart guy. Jason is the co-founder and creative director of the collaborative writing platform Editorially; a faculty member in the MFA Interaction Design program at SVA; a co-founder of A Book Apart; and the founder of Typedia, a shared encyclopedia of typefaces online. A quick look at his portfolio and you’ll see why he’s been such a success, and such a role model for young, up-and-coming designers. Full story : jasonsantamaria.com/ See a screen shot
Go: A Kidd’s Guide to Graphic Design
Kids love to express themselves, and are designers by nature—whether making posters for school, deciding what to hang in their rooms, or creating personalized notebook covers. Go, by the award-winning graphic designer Chip Kidd, is a stunning introduction to the ways in which a designer communicates his or her ideas to the world. It’s written and designed just for those curious kids, not to mention their savvy parents, who want to learn the secret of how to make things dynamic and interesting. “An excellent introduction to graphic design through [the author’s] own excellent work. Anyone interested in the subject, including most practitioners, will find it delightful.”—Milton Glaser Full story : Go: A Kidd’s Guide to Graphic Design by Chip Kidd
Can graphic design make feminism cool?
Can you think of a time when Target was just another Walmart, and Apple computers were just bulgy colorful things reminiscent of the start of an anticipated space-age millennium? Now think of those products today and how they got to where they are on the “It” meter through social validity. It didn’t happen over night. New brands take time, and at the hands of very skilled graphic designers, a rebranding project can change the psychology behind a product, person or concept. A modern, effective and clever design that starts appearing everywhere will get people talking. If it looks aesthetically pleasing, it converts into a trend – that’s what happened to the World War II-era British public safety poster. You may have heard of it – “Keep Calm and Carry On.”
It is often said that the difference between an artist and a designer is that an artist works for his/herself, while a designer performs a service. However, looking at Sergey Serov’s list of the top designers working in Russia today, one can definitely recognize individual styles shining through that collectively give Russian design an identity.
