Metamorphosis Urban Revitalization Mural Design Transforms A Public Space
Charmaine Banach, assistant professor from Quinnipiac University (Hamden), helped former students to design and install a 300 foot vinyl mural earlier this week in downtown Youngstown, OH. The project started as an independent study course that Banach taught while working as a graphic design professor at Youngstown State University. In this course, she guided students in using design processes for urban revitalization and since moving to Connecticut has continued to work with the students to get the project printed and installed. Anthony Nolan Connects the Dots in Identity package
We found this entry in our notes from some months ago, and was surprised we didn’t include it then. Johnson Banks came up with the bright idea of “Connecting the Dots” in a rebranding of The Anthony Nolan Trust. (A register of potential bone marrow donors in the UK.) The National Design Award Winners Announced
It’s no surprise that Paula Scher’s graphic design work since the 1970s, for cultural, corporate and educational institutions (like a Queens public high school, shown), has won her a 2013 National Design Award for communication design from the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum. But it is surprising that she waited 14 years for the honor. Full story : The New York Times See the entire, multi-story montage
A lesson about designing ugly PowerPoints
Prism: the PowerPoint presentation so ugly it was meant to stay secret — The shock of the NSA revelations is less in the content of their slides than quite how badly they have been designed Shock horror, America (allegedly) is spying (allegedly) on everyone (allegedly)! Last week’s revelations of the top secret Prism surveillance programme might not have come as much of a surprise to anyone using Facebook, Google and Apple all day (what else are we chucking out all our own data for, if not to give the spooks a hand?), but it was a shocking story on one count at least Full story : The Guardian See another horrible PowerPoint screen

Patricia got us going on and on and on
Unfortunately lots of the media streams these days allow people to be completely anonymous. Well, that’s okay with us if they don’t want credit for their work. This person, Patricia M Pilllpat (agence eureka), has amassed a huge collection of memoribelia and antique curiosities online in a Flickr stream. Ooooba doooooba you’ll love her “Taffeta” collecitons if you’re into antique advertising stuff. The illustration is from her “Dessin , lettres & typo” collection but you’ll want to see them all… it could be a totally endless supply of visual ideas! Rebranding olive oil
A new category was added to the Greek Graphic Design & Illustration Awards (EVGE) this year: Olive oil packaging. The move was telling of the current dynamics of standardized Greek olive oil production and the export-oriented direction the market is taking, given that an increasing number of olive oil producers are approaching creative local companies in search of visual identities that will secure their products a place on the shelves of foreign supermarkets and high-end gastronomy outlets. Last year alone, Greek olive oil exports were up 24 percent in Germany and 67.5 percent in China. Full story : International Herald Tribune See the whole line
