One more note about Steve…

By now you’ve all heard the sad news about the passing of Steve Jobs. And, I don’t need to remind anyone what the work of Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak meant to the publishing and design fields. There are more than 11 million posts on the web about Steve. On the day he passed, I posted this to the UGNN site:
* Steve Jobs Has Died * Steve Jobs: Goodbye to an Icon * President Obama on the Passing of Steve Jobs * Look no farther than Cupertino * Steve, thank you * Memories Of Steve Jobs: Interviews & Inspiration * Steve Jobs Quotes
* On and on … more and more

Michael Doret’s Steinweiss Script

It’s always a thrill to get a new font, and a major thrill to get one from Michael Doret. You might remember we spotlighted Michael’s Metro Script five years ago for the 12th Fonts Fest. We are thrilled again this year with Michael’s Steinweiss Script — and it’s been voted the ‘official‘ font for the 17th annual fall fonts festival!

Copperplate Calligraphy

I’ve preached about the beauty of copperplate calligraphy before — arguably the most beautiful form of hand lettering. I’ve encouraged you to at least try your had at producing it by hand, because by doing so you experience the true are and craft of penmanship. Here’s some help to get you started

Retro Fonts : the real thing

One of my serious on-going complaints in the graphic arts industry is the use of the term “retro” — fewer and fewer designers actually know what it means. We’re seeing literally hundreds of tutorials titled retro-this or retro-that. So, listen up young designers: here’s the quintessential reference on the use of ‘retro’ fonts. In fact, it’s called RETROFONTS!

17th Annual Fonts Surf Three

As we continue our typography surf for this year, we take some twists and turns from the Korean Pavilion At Shanghai, to the branding remake for Chocolate … along with * Eden Martinez : Typography Illustrations * Lettering on photographs * Panos Vassiliou – PF Champion Script Pro * Typefaces give us signals, and more — continuing through October …

Ampersand Fever

Twenty Three years ago I selected an ampersand for the banner of DT&G, and then used it in many different creative ways in the newsletter and eventually, in the site, like our &Else column. Today, it seems like everyone has the ampersand fever … thus a new series in our Typography department …
* a project by Stephen Gose
* Sarah France likes ampersands
* Ampersands at VisualizeUs
* Ampersand pretzels
* Amper Sandwich at Pinterest
* Ampersand Project
… and more as we discover more outbreaks of Ampersand Fever …

Just My Type – A Book About Fonts

Simon Garfield’s new book “Just My Type” is a wonderful romp through the world of fonts and typography … a little bit history, a little big rumor, a lot of background and a pile of really fun insights into type, letters and letterforms — required reading! — required reading!

A final Thought from Paul Rand

“Design is the method of putting form and content together.
  Design, just as art, has multiple definitions;
    there is no single definition.
      Design can be art.
        Design can be aesthetics.
          Design is so simple,
            that’s why it is so complicated.”

A final Thought from Steve Jobs

“… I learned about serif and sans serif typefaces, about

varying the amount of space between different letter combinations,

about what makes great typography great.

It was beautiful, historical, artistically subtle in a way that

science can’t capture, and I found it fascinating.”

Steve remembering his fascination with fonts in the days before the Macintosh.
