03. Negative Space: nothing says a lot

Someone asked about “Negative Space” and then blogs all over the place
picked up the buzz word — but nobody actually delves into the psychology
and philosophy of designing with negative space. It’s one of the
most powerful tools a graphic designer’s toolbox.

04. Designing Spaces

in logo designing, as well as other design and page layout projects

05. Logos: of Negative Space

Designing a logo is a process that combines a thorough understanding of
the essence of the client’s message. When a designer sends the message
utilizing multiple images within a unique single image
— we call that a “world class logo”

06. Parkol: graphic design & negative space

Further explorations into the design of negative space takes us to the
design studios of Nick Senin Parkol from Saint-Petersburg, Russia.

and message of graphic design

10. 60-Seconds: Twitter Tweet Jerks

As a relatively new Twitter user, I’m disturbed at some of the practices
showing up in the tweet stream. Yes, it’s good finding so many wonderful
resources … but some of the tweeters just aren’t “our” kind of people

11. Elements Plus filters, masks and more

Andrei Doubrovski’s latest Adobe Photoshop Elements Plus kit includes
smart filters, vector masks, and many more advanced tools normally
hidden under the hood — unlocking undocumented advanced
functions in Photoshop Elements

12. Photo idea: Photo Tent Layout

We’ve had a number of readers refer back to this page, unable to find it.
One of the more popular layouts we’ve presented over the years is the
Digital photo tent display – great novelty, and a wonderful gift idea

13. Time Billing for Freelancers

Who has the most problem keeping up with time tracking, invoicing, billing,

15. &Else News for November

Since the new layout of the Design Center, we’re handling the news a
little differently — there’s no specific news page. Our tagging system
now gathers all the articles based on topic or keyword,
so it’s easy to find the latest news.

We’re also uploading articles on a regular day-by-day basis rather
than waiting until the end of the month for one big upload.
The past few weeks saw these among others:

* Remove red-eye with ease
* Master Panoramic Photography
* ArtOptimizer for Illustrator
* HDR Photography for Mac OS
* Palm Pre: The Missing Manual
* Geocoding for iPhoto
* Photography effects for iPhone
* Mobile Design and Development
* Art Fotografic releases Album
* Anti-Malware in Snow Leopard
* Map drawing for the Mac
* DiskLibrary now Snow
* Scribbles: Draw outside the lines!

16. Photoshop: 911 tip of the month, Slicing

Annoying Gray Boxes — One frustrated reader shouts:
> Where did these little gray boxes come from
> and how do I get rid of them????”

Ahhhh the Slice Boxes again. Careful what you click.
In a Photoshop Class at JMU, students are forever lamenting about
the boxes appearing for no logical reason.
Once they appear you think you can’t get rid of them.

Those boxes appear when ever you click the SLICE tool.

So, if you accidentally click that tool, whether you notice the gray
boxes immediately or not, you can go to the menu:
View > Show and choose Slices

That should make them go away.
The new forum is open, but it’s now empty
— we invite you to post your Photoshop 911 calls at

18. November opening the holidays

Thank you all for your help and feedback during our first month under the
new CMS system. Things are running smoothly, although my Google rankings
have fallen through the floor. Oh well, Google rankings aren’t everything.

If you’re a nice guy, you’ll put a link on your site to the Design Center
… show it to me, and I’ll send you a little something to say THANKS!

Don’t forget to check out the new forums experiment.
The old ones will go away in just a few days.

Opening the Holidays: During this time of year we like to investigate
cool self-promotional ideas for the holidays, and again, discovering
little known tips and tricks for using Photoshop and InDesign for
those promos. Please don’t forget to tell us about your ideas or
favorite discoveries.
