For years, we've talked about the powers of Artlandia's powerful and fun pattern design software. Now they have launched an awesome new web application for making and sharing repeating patterns -- online! In your browser! It's called Artlandia SymmetryMill, and if you ever use or need patterns in your graphics, you want to try this!
SymmetryMill extends the pattern design arsenal with the latest, exceptionally easy-to-use tools for a wide audience ranging from fine artists and surface, textile, stationery, web, and other designers, to hobbyists and high school students. Integrated into the pattern design workflow is access to a new open web repository of repeating patterns.
SymmetryMill complements Artlandia's popular pattern design plug-ins SymmetryWorks and SymmetryShop that run in professional- grade Adobe applications (Illustrator and Photoshop, respectively). SymmetryMill, on the other hand, requires only a web browser and is equally useful to professional designers and "the rest of us." Recent versions of Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Safari, and other popular browsers are supported. The most accessible of the Artlandia offerings, SymmetryMill is also the most affordable and is available for a markedly lower subscription fee.
The new application creates seamless repeating patterns of all seventeen mathematically possible symmetry types from essentially any JPG, PNG, or gif image. The built-in blending algorithms ensure the creation of seamless patterns even when the result may otherwise show visible boundaries between pattern motifs. The standard color adjustment filters and the sharpen and blur filters modify the patterns in place. Viewing saved pattern snapshots automatically executes the exact recipes for creating the patterns and sets the appropriate values of all SymmetryMill controls.
Pattern Central -- Users can share their patterns with friends or publicly on the new Artlandia web repository Pattern Central where patterns can be browsed by date, popularity, tags, and other categories. New submissions are also announced on the Twitter account @symmetrystream. Shared patterns can be loaded back in SymmetryMill with a click. Importantly, loading a shared pattern also shows how the pattern was created. This is indispensable for beginners and saves time for experienced users, who can immediately modify shared patterns and create their own derivative pattern sets.
I encourage you to go and take a spin in Artlandia SymmetryMill! It is available as a free limited version just to let you try out it's powers. If you like it, they have several different plans for most creative users. It's very cool ... and you can tell them Fred sent you!
