A message from Doug Clifford... Take More Pictures The last couple of years have been busy ones in the Clifford household. Immediately after moving into a new house, I launched what has since become a major photo resource on the web. I’ve been so busy with the web venture that I haven’t had much time for my favorite pastime, taking pictures. A few years ago, it wasn't unusual to shoot four rolls of film in an hour, twenty rolls or more in a month. Compare this to 1998. I only shot four rolls in the entire year! Before the rust starts showing, I have resolved to pick up where I left off. I've cleaned my cameras, popped new batteries in them, and I'm ready to go. Now if it would just stop raining in Seattle. So what about you? Here are some suggestions for improving your picture-taking skills in 1999. Take plenty of photographs Shoot at least a couple of rolls a film each month. As with anything, practice will help you improve. Study the prints or slides when you get them back from the photo lab. Pick the best ones. Examine the rest. Learn from your mistakes. Carry your camera wherever you go. Reread that instruction manual How long since you read the camera manual? Read it again. You'll be surprised how much you've forgotten about camera controls you rarely use. You might even be stimulated to try something new Get motivated Sign up for a photography class at your local adult education or recreation program. Join a camera club in your town. Both activities will encourage you to take pictures, and you'll meet others who share the same interest. (To find clubs in your town, ask at your local camera store or library, or visit the web sites for regional camera club organizations and national photographic societies.) Digital Camera Update You are probably aware Fred Showker has been testing digital cameras from Sony, Olympus, and Nikon since last fall and has reported his findings to our 167,000 monthly readers. Fred's been so excited with the overall results and the top notch resolution of the Nikon Coolpix 900-s he's decided to get one for himself and the Design and Publishing Center. Of course, we'll continue testing and reporting on any digital equipment made available to our staff. That's why we're here.
