ICANN gears up to offer huge range of new top level domains
The Internet Corportion for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is meeting in Sydney in late June and progressing its plan to allow almost any string of letters to be used for a global top level domain (gTLD), like .org or .net, will be high on its agenda. Paul Twomey says: "There are concerns about domains that might appear to represent communities, such as dot Maori, but prove not to do so. And finally, there are questions of morality and public order - which is a well-defined concept in intellectual property law."

Court Revives Claim That VeriSign Monopolizes Domain Registration
A coalition of Web site owners successfully used 19th century antitrust law to accuse VeriSign of monopolizing the .com and .net registration system, "so essential to the operation of our sophisticated 21st century communications network," the 9th Circuit ruled. VeriSign singlehandedly operates .com and .net domain registries, under contracts with the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, or ICANN, a nonprofit oversight body created by the Department of Commerce.

New top-level domains could cause .trademark chaos
Wrangles over domain squatting are nothing new, but opening up top level domains raises some interesting issues of ownership. Who should decide who has the right to a certain domain, and will they really add much to the navigation and identity of the web? (Pic) The Future Laboratory and the domain registrar Gandi.net asked 1,000 people what they thought of the liberalisation of web domains - 65% of people said they think it will litter the internet with pointless domain names, 60% didn't think it would improve their internet experience ad 46% think it will make things too complicated.

ICANN Announces New gTLD Program Updates
The Internet Corporation For Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) offers a set of announcements for public discussion as meeting in Sydney nears. ICANN has posted the Pre-Delegation Testing explanatory memoranda. This explanatory memo has been incorporated to the following currently open public comment forum. The deadline for comments is 20 July 2009.
The purpose of the pre-delegation technical test is to verify the applicant has met its commitment to establish registry operations in accordance with ICANN?s technical and operational criteria described in the Applicant Guidebook. The checks are also intended to ensure that the applicant can operate the gTLD in a stable and secure manner. There are three sets of tests or verification: DNS infrastructure testing and prerequisites, registry system testing and prerequisites, and an additional requirement to provide for continuity of basic registry operations.
