  15. AUGUST BACK TO (DESIGN) SCHOOL

Sumertime and the graphics are easy ... maybe?

Our content has been flowing, and there's really too much here, so I went just brief on the &Else department, and I skipped a few that have already been getting a bunch of readership. You know, if you subscribe to our RSS feed, you'll get article notices as they are published and then you can just keep our text newsletters for archival reference.
      That's another reason we send only ascii text. You can save each newsletter in a small, compact text file and it will be fully searchable. I have mine, going back to somewhere around 1995 or 1996, so any article in the past two decades is easily findable. You can also search for any text string in the entire Graphic-Design dynasty here:
* www.graphic-design.com/search.html

Enough of that, let's get on to the fun stuff. We'll be back in a few weeks for August!

60-Seconds #336 : You Are Annoying Your Customers? Do you know why?

Gavin Jocious has written an article that really struck a note with me. I remember back in 2004, O'Reilly Media came out with a series of books about things that annoy people about technology. They invited people to send in their annoyances for the next book. They had so many coming in they published a whole series of books. But in Gavin's article "You Are Annoying Your Customers... " he asks "Do you know why?" Gavin writes . . .

Creative Tidbits #233: Design on a Grid, Crazy ideas, designing condoms, Girls and more!

If you look at this week's snippet, you learn an important lesson about creativity. (The snippets are the little 'sayings' or pull-quotes over to the right) So we're having a great time discovering truly creative ideas, and truly crazy ideas as well. I'd really like to learn about your ideas -- and share them with DT&G readers!
* Coming up With Crazy Ideas (Just Like Albert Einstein)
* Meet the Boy Behind the Design of HBO’s Girls Titles
* Designing the Next Generation of Condom Packaging
* Carbon Crown / project typography . . .

Creative Tidbits #232: Extraordinary type, Google type, doors, design and more!

In this issue we have another video, a rather interesting look at Google's entry into the typography world and we'll return again to visit Jim Parkinson. There's a gallery and a tutorial of sorts. Have fun, and don't forget to send in your discoveries to share with DT&G readers!
* Google + Monotype: Noto Project’s unified font for all languages
* A collection of Art Nouveau doors from around the world
* Design a Typographic, Movie Themed Magazine Cover

Creative Tidbits #231: Photos of Obama, Instagram magazines, moving type and more!

Cruising through the summer, we're finding all kinds of cool stuff that you'll enjoy! We particularly liked the photos from Pete Souza, and the Facebook spoofs! Enjoybr /> * An Interview with President Obama's White House Photographer Pete Souzabr /> * 20 photography magazines that you should follow on Instagrambr /> * Typography Kit After Effects Templates . . .

Ad Blockers : Whitelisting ads, killing ads, advertising scorched earth, where will it end?

It's beginning to get crazy -- what the industry is doing to protect the golden egg. If they just used some tasteful advertising, it wouldn't be so bad. But they want to gouge you and prod you and corner you into clicking their buttons. One page I visited recently was so riddled with ads, the content couldn't load. It's ridiculous. At least some people are doing something about it

What's the difference between old and new? Be careful, don't fall into this trap!

While writing the Red Giant article (in the &Else department), launching next week, we ran across a whole collection of spectacular videos produced using the Red Giant's various products. Folks, this is some fun stuff!
      This comedy short film written by Seth Worley and narrated by Patton Oswalt, presents . . .
the story of Drew McHugh, a man whose penchant for the new new devices, new fashion, new friends is challenged when he discovers the rustic appeal of old-fashioned things.

Ad Blockers : Google changing their tune, who's blocking and who's not

We haven't had an ad-blocker update since December, and I thought it had pretty much blown over. But now we're finding the industry is pushing back, and even Google is getting in on the act.
* Watch, pay or go away: Google to enable publishers to charge users with ad blockers
* Study: Many adopt ad blockers to avoid ads, not bad user experiences
* Google will block some website ads on Chrome browser . . .

Creative Tidbits #230: Classic Fonts Poster, Comic Sans replacement, 404 and more!

Of course we always like to watch the masters, and see what they are up to -- so I saw this Steven Heller piece and had to pass it along. The guys at Pushpin Studios have been at the top of the game for fifty years and we can all learn a lesson or two from them. We also mix it up a bit in this episode with a good fonts item and an essential web design resource. Have fun!
* Philip Trautmann creates Fonts out of Passion.
* How to design 404 pages for your web site
* Alphabets to Go? Analog to digital? . . .

Design Apps: Typography on your photos, great retouching, reflections, montage and more

Here we are, rolling into vacation season -- and you'll have your camera, and maybe even the camera in your iPhone, and you'll want to discover some fun apps that go along with fun on vacation! Some of these we selected because they're great fun and great capabilities right out of the box -- others we chose because of their sophistication and benefit to the designer. The two typography items are home runs, and will make a better rounded experience for adding type to designs and images!
* Add beautiful text & artwork to your photos!
* Hyperlapse from Instagram
* Typography Insight
* Camera360 Ultimate
* Photo Reflection
* A Beautiful Mess . . .

60-Seconds 335: I've been stung by the Copyright bee. Believe me, that bee sting hurts!

For nearly three decades, I've invited readers to send in their images and referrals to share with DTG readers. It became so popular, and so beneficial for the sender, I got too comfortable with it and even stopped saving the paper trail. Bad decision. A reader sent in a photo some time ago, and in January, we decided to show it in an article in our Gallery. In May we got an email demanding we remove it, claiming ownership. . . .
So we removed it and thought all was well. But all was not well, and here's the rest of the story.
