You'll remember that The Design Center and DT&G have taken pride over the years in remaining as non-platform specific as possible, and provide content that is accessible to everyone without a lot of fancy configuration and bother.
__ With the advent of Verdana however things will change a bit. In the early '90s we switched to Frutiger as our official replacement for Helvetica. We have used it for all the anchor ('house') typography in The Design Center as well as The User Group Network. Verdana has tested out to be a very close knock-off of Frutiger so we're going to experiment with it a bit here in the web site.
__ If you download then load Verdana, then then this page will render properly. Don't worry though if you decide NOT to get it. If your browser is not "font aware" or doesn't have the correct font installed it will simply go back to the default font -- or the one you have configured as your default font in the browser.
__ It is my opinion that Verdana is not very well rendered. Even with ATM installed, we still see jaggies in the slanted storkes, where the installed Adobe Helvetica PS font smooths superbly on the monitor and print. I am told that consumer level PC (Windows) users are used to looking at aliased text, and they assume it's the norm. We witnessed this yesterday while helping a client on a brand new DELL computer... the typography was unbelievably horrid, but the client thought it was just fine. "Isn't that the way it looks on all computers?" Reason in itself to buy a Mac rather than PC.

If you wish to install Verdana to take advantage of web sites which use it you may visit the Microsoft Typography site and download the files.

If you visit the Microsoft site, things will speed along better if you turn graphics off.
Keep in mind that these are TrueType fonts. They will not work the same as your Postscript Fonts.
