Introducing a new font family from the Garage Fonts Collection

see larger version If you happen to be wandering through the north eastern corner of Oklahoma you might just pass by a small-town sign shop operated by Michael Gene Adkins. Between lettering vans, and building vinyl-cut signs of all kinds, Mike finds time to ply his creative talents to the art of font creation.
... It didn't start out that way -- Mike was a full-time employee for a larger sign company who could give a hoot about fonts. Little did the owner know that when he let Mike go, he was doing us all a favor by freeing Mike to develop some cool fonts!

... Mike was soon discovered by Sign Business Magazine, and he began converting well known sign-painters' lettering alphabets to digital format for vinyl cutting. While the 'big-boy' font companies were totally ignorant of the really superb type styles available in the sign lettering field, Mike took the opening and ran with it.
... First Vision Font actually evolved from one of Mike's previous fonts called "Excursions Alternate." Mike wanted to push the design further toward the futuristic look, and break up some of the characters. The name "First Vision" comes from Mike's early years of roll playing games, and the name exegesis refers a "collection of written works".
... First Vision comes with a family of bold, medium and appropriate italic faces, as well as a "TEK" family spin-off for use in smaller sizes. Tek also comes in medium, bold, italic and bold italic.

... We knew right away it is perfect for the logo facelift of one of our web site clients.
After working with the font for a while I began to become very aware of the pure character shapes. This font offers a lot of opportunity for the designer to craft further graphics based on many of the individual characters in the set. Here I took the lower case 'a' and rotated it 180 degrees and found a handsome 'e'. The clean, uniform leg and stem thickness (with straight connecting paths) make the font ultimately usable as a graphic device too. In your vector program you can clip parts of characters, and merge them with other parts to build your own unique graphics for logos or symbols. Very nice.

... The font reads well in all sizes, and while not recommended for text, the TEK version makes nice captions and support text where a smaller size is desired (14 pt. or larger). Mike points out that on vehicles, and signs the font actually becomes more readable at a distance. He promises a photo of the next sign project using the font.
