SOME WILL CALL CASLON THE FREEDOM FONT because it was the font of choice to typeset both The Declaration of Independence and The Constitution of the United States of America. For some thirty years prior to that day in 1776, Caslon was the printing standard of the British Empire. Unfortunately, Caslon’s creator, William Caslon I, passed away in 1766, and was unable to see his font in use for such magnificent purpose.

Those were exciting times of discovery, the beginnings of many traditions which found their roots in craftsmanship. Just as the New England silversmith Paul Revere would set the tradition of forging pewter “Jefferson” cups, Caslon’s insightful ability to craft beautiful letterforms grew out of his craft as metal engraver for (of all things) gun barrels! Caslon was born in 1722.

Unfortunately we do not know who actually developed Caslon Antique, but they must have been inspired by the many versions that can still be found in the museums of America, as well as hand lettered on the wooden shingle signs that decorate the streets of the Capital, Williamsburg.

Caslon Antique is the first font that came to mind when thinking about fonts for this month’s web site critique and makeover. What a perfect font to decorate the web site, signage and collateral materials for the “Toymaker of Williamsburg”. Caslon Antique is a simple font. No frills, dingbats or modern day embellishments -- it speaks with a clear tone and confident feeling.
That’s probably what inspired Ralph Smith, president and owner of Phil's Fonts, to forge the font into digital format for his in-house font collection.

While uniquely suited to send the warm and friendly message of “antiquity” like no other font available, Caslon Antique should not be reserved for signage and headlines alone -- it makes a superb face for unique or specialized blocks of text that need the feel of history. (Don’t get me wrong, you wouldn’t want to set your annual report in 10-point Caslon Antique!) Use it for furniture store clients who want to align with tradition, book stores who hold hard covers more important than paper, or restaurants who serve traditional “fare” ... and of course, by all means if you happen to be a Toymaker in Williamsburg, Virginia!
