Victor Lints wants to
Maintain detail quality while resizing...

question: I have a scanned image (250 mB) which isn't a good
quality res. and my goal is to down-size the image while keeping the
image visable/readible. What are some tip's/hints to keep
the image in good quality res., when resizing?
(note: there is text on many of the objects in the
image....shrinking could cause the letters to be
blurry/hazy) thanx vic

A
Vic, the best way to do this is to ... obviously ... rescan.

If this is not an option, then work in the areas of Sharpen, Unsharp Mask, and Image Size.

Reduce your image a bit at a time, perhaps 15% to 20% per episode, and lightly sharpen between reductions. This is the best way to do it.

During this step down process, save the file at various stages. At some point it will be sharpened too much and you'll want to back out. Also be aware that this process may degrade your saturation as well as brightness. As the file reduces the color will get darker and somewhat muddy. Saturation and Brightness/Contrast will help you maintain the delecate color balance.

You may also take a look at the channels and see if sharpening one by one helps retain the image quality. Sometimes this works better because of contrast more than anything else.
