Tip #52 - Ripped edges from Scratch...

What if I don't have a scanner
(from a DT&G subscriber)

In Photoshop, use the "Image" menu and enlarge the canvas to give you some working room.
Now, make a border selection including as much of the newly created margin as you like. You may want to include some of the edge of the live image.
Next, apply a feather to the selection. Using the "Filter" menu, choose "Distort" and choose a "Displacement Map". You'll find many of these on the Photoshop CD.
Play with the various settings, and be sure to save intermediary steps. You'll probably come up with some read gems you'll want to save for later.
Once you have the thing looking good, save it to a layer and there you've got your photo edge. In the layer you can also fill the center void with black, reduce the size to just cover your photo, and convert it to a mask.
Now you mask your photo with the newly created "edge" and the photo gets the edges. Try it! It'll be fun for'ya.
