Tip #50 - Alternatives to purchasing software?
-
There's no way I can afford Photoshop!
- (A reader in a recent workshop)
-
Go to http://www.shareware.com
and pig out. You'd be amazed at how many image editing programs there are
for just a few bucks shareware. America Online has dozens of them on
both platforms. Also take a snoop into
Altavista and search for
the type software you're looking for.
There's almost always a "demo" version available somewhere.
-
Hit the yard sales, and online classified.
Most of the time you can pick up old versions of
software that are perfectly good. A recent note I saw offered
Photoshop 2.5 CD with books for $125.00.
I bought ColorStudio and Digital Darkroom, just to have a look-see,
in America Online's Classified board -- both for $25.00!
-
User Groups -- Let me also recommend you join a user group.
User groups are clubs that share a
common interest in a specific platform or software. There you'll
find all sorts of info. Sometimes they hold swap meets where
software is sold at ridiculously low prices.
For a user group in your area, try:

-
If you are in the
Washington D.C. area, DO NOT miss joining The Washington Apple PI
(Mac) or The Capital PC User Group (PC) -- the PI has two mega-yard
sales each year, and last year a vendor was selling Photoshop for
$69.00. (by the way, it's also an excellent way to pass those
unused products you've got along to other, more interested users!)

Who knows? You may not even need the software... another alternative is to zip into Kinkos,
scan your photo, use the high-end software they have and zip home
all for under ten bucks. It may take a while the first few times
out, but once you get good at it you can keep the cost down.

Snoop around. You'd be amazed!
