Tip #45 - Creating soft shadows...

We're interested in doing some "soft" drop shadows
behind type elements, but none of the graphic artists we use (freelancers) seem capable of achieving this look.
One tried doing this with our (very nice logo), and the results were disastrous. I notice you use something comparable as your page headings (as in "& Type!") The shadow has fuzzy edges, making it more realistic.

Softening the blow...
Yes, you got me! I don't always advocate the shadow thing, I think it's overused. But when you want it, you want it! Here goes...

Simple soft drop shadows:
  1. In a new Photoshop document, create a new transparent layer.
  2. Next key in, or paste the type directly into that layer.
  3. Now duplicate the layer. Since the shadow will go in the back, select the original type layer and make it active.
  4. Now go up to the menu and select Filters -> then Gaussian Blur. When the dialog comes up, you'll be able to tweak the settings for the most desired amount of softness.
  5. At this point all you have to do is position the shadow to your liking. Select All, then hit the arrow keys to move the shadow to its new position.
You could then use the arrow keys to move the graphic tiny bits at a time. This also makes it easier to move it back if you have to, because hopefully you're counting the clicks!
I also recommend using a bit of transparancy to the layer as well, because solid shadows are a bit rude, and you want any objects behind to show through!
NOTE: Be sure to read Tips #46, #47 and #47.5 which also relate to shadows!
