Tip #98

[Transparent graphics in Photoshop?

Seems there's a new flock of PS users every year about this time... guess it's all those students graduating, discovering everything they didn't learn in school.

Since a quick search in Altavista shows up 480,000 pages that explain transparant GIF files from PS, we'll be brief.

1. Create image on the target background color
2. Change mode to index color
3. Select Export from the file menu with gif89a
4. Use the eyedropper to select the color to be transparent

Version #2
1. Select image, then Copy (key command or Edit menu)
2. Make a new file (command "N" or NEW from File Menu)
3. Check the "Transparent background" option
4. Paste (key command "V" or Edit menu)
The file will be cropped to the edge of the image, the background will be transparant.
5. Select Export from the file menu with gif89a
6. Use the eyedropper to select the color to be transparent

Of course you could also look at our #37 Tip, or zoom over to Lynda's web site at http://www.lynda.com/ where she probably does the best job.

I know some of you will have a better method... please share it with the rest of us.
