Tip #89 - Mr. Vector said...

[ Kill the Rip

Before you run off to the service bureau with all those Easter egg masterpieces consider rasterizing them out of your drawing (vector) program into a bitmap format. Highly complicated vector drawings take a considerable amount of time to RIP, and may even queer-out and not rip at all. (The "RIP" is the raster image processor that images your file to film or paper.) You don't want that phone call in the middle of the night from the harried SB technician. (Just recently happened to me after 8-hours of no-go ripping!)

Additionally, you'll need to be aware of non-illustrator vector files. None of them (Corel, Canvas, Macromedia, or Freehand -- Freehand being the worst of the lot) produce 100% reliable postscript, and run a higher danger of flaking out at rip time. It's advised to save them out of Illustrator before sending.

If the file is particularly point/path laden then read the following and convert to rasterized data. Once done, the TIF or raster/eps file will RIP much faster.
