Designing Women features akila seshasayee

Designing with type is an exacting yet beautiful art. Typography imparts a visual play of structural integrity mixed with a dynamic interaction between space and counter-space. It gives us great pleasure to introduce an exciting young practitioner of the typographic arts...

akila

Akila Seshasayee Akila Seshasayee is an independent graphic designer working in New Delhi, India.
She has been working in the field for 15 years -- the last four of which have been on her own as an independent. She comments...

"Before this, I worked for various organizations, mostly in newspaper and magazine design, but with some television experience thrown in as well."
My first love has always been typography, as these samples reflect.

Indeed, when the design has a love and respect for good typography, it is easily evident. Four of these samples were created for a monthly journal called Seminar. Each issue carries a serious theme, so Akila had to design accordingly. publication, and covers a particular theme every issue. Akila comments:
"... in the publication's 40 years, it has used only typography for its cover designs. I have been doing their covers for over two years, and look forward to them every month!"

The fifth sample is a poster for an international conference and exhibition for the beauty industry, which was be held in 2001 in New Delhi. Akila designed the logo, and all related print materials.
In this piece we see that while the predominate image is art, it is still heavily influenced by Akila's typographic sensibilities.

We appreciate this brief glimpse at Akila's art. Unfortunately shortly after this interview, we were no longer able to reach her at the only email address we had. Somehow she simply slipped out of sight. Hopefully she'll visit again and get back in touch.
