You've heard me rave about Katrin's work in the past, and our last interview with her continues to be one of our most popular online interviews.
This third edition of Photoshop Restoration & Retouching brings everything up to date with a ton of new scenarios, tools and techniques to transform faded, damaged photographs into beautiful images that are as clear and crisp as the day they were taken.

DT&G So, what's new and exciting? The new edition is destined to become another classic -- but what about the update?
It's not just a re-boil is it?
Katrin: Updating the "Photoshop Restoration & Retouching" was more of a challenge than we thought... no we're not complaining but it was like being in a well established garden (1st and 2nd editions) and having to decide what to rip out to make room for the new plants (techniques and CS2 features).
DT&G I can imagine! Where do you even start?
Katrin: Wayne and I reviewed every page and technique and started the update project by replacing as many images as possible. In the end we replaced 85-90% of the illustrations.
DT&G Wow! And our readers who have seen the previous books know that's a ton of images!
Katrin: Then we decided to crank up the level of the techniques by choosing the more challenging examples over the easier ones. The way we see it - users/readers/Photoshop lovers are becoming more and more sophisticated and this third edition reflects that.
DT&G Okay... so what departments should we dig into the most?
Katrin: Well, of course we've maintained the lessons structure, so for early learners it's best to just start at the beginning. For those who want to jump around in the book, I'm partial to Chapter 10. It reveals techniques that the best NY retouchers use. If the readers want to learn about portriat or glamour retouching chapters then 9 and 10 are the ones. Some have already said those two chapters are worth the price of the book alone.
DT&G So you actually do listen to reader feedback?
Katrin:
Absolutely! Here is what one reader wrote,
"I bought the third version because there have been several upgrades to Photoshop since the first version was written. It is hard to believe that this version could be even better than the earlier one, but it is."
... and another:
"All of the photos that are used as samples are different from those used before. The book is longer. The quality of information available in the book is stronger and deeper. It is worth every penny."

DT&G Don't you love to hear from readers? I do too. Do you get lots of questions about masking hair? I remember once upon a time you said:
"When it comes to silhouetting people with a full head of hair, animals with fur, or scenes
with fine detail, I sometimes wish that everyone was as bald"
Still feel that way?
Katrin: How did you remember that??? Yes, restoring old family photos is a very popular question. Read my article from "Creative Point of View" about the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
Rather than relegating the damaged photos to a dark, forgotten basement corner or a hot, dusty attic, let's get them out and put them to good use. I've posted a PDF of chapter 6 "Damage Control and Repair" that covers eliminating cracks, tears, and rips; dealing with stains, scribbles, discoloration and so forth.
