IN celebration of the upcoming August 5th “National Coloring Day” we’re showing some of our favorite experiences — whether it’s for creative inspiration or just the love of coloring complicated, detailed patterns — by any name — these tessellations or techellations will make you crazy with glee!

The Wikipedia defines tessellation as the tiling of a plane using one or more geometric shapes, called tiles, with no overlaps and no gaps. In mathematics, tessellations can be generalized to higher dimensions and a variety of geometries. (More) In computer graphics, tessellation is used to manage datasets of polygons (sometimes called vertex sets) presenting objects in a scene and divide them into suitable structures for rendering. (More) You probably know the term best in relation to M. C. Escher, a Dutch graphic artist who made mathematically inspired woodcuts, lithographs, and was intensely interested in tessellations. (More) He actually referred to them as a “Regular Division of the Plane” — irregular shapes or combinations of shapes that interlock completely to cover a surface or plane. (More)
